Opportunity

Ambulance services are under pressure to achieve a step-change in productivity, due to a growing and evolving demand e.g., due to an ageing population, the increased prevalence of mental health patients. Coupled with constrained financial resources, there is increasing challenge to reach key performance targets across the board, particularly recovering C2 performance to pre-pandemic levels.

Unlike the acute sector, the ambulance service lacks standardised data, metrics and reporting. There is a significant opportunity to benchmark performance across Trusts to uncover best practice and highlight the most significant areas of opportunity to improve service delivery.

Approach

TN worked with five ambulance service trusts to benchmark key DCA shift performance metrics, compare performance across Trusts and identify areas of opportunity.

  • Codification / benchmarking
On paper: Evaluated and compared policies and SOPs to identify differences and capture best practice.

On the ground: Conducted site visits and observations, engaging with crews to observe what a DCA shift looks like in practice

In the data: Conducted analysis of each DCA shift component, linking out-of-service data, shift data, and incident data
  • Engagement
Engaged in workshops with 30+operational leaders from across each Trust to turn insights into actionable next steps
