Opportunity

The ambulance sector is at a turning point with services under pressure to deliver a sustainable, high-quality service with reduced costs. Emergent technology and AI pose an opportunity to achieve a step change in efficiency and quality of care at a reduced cost.

A significant determinant in patient outcomes is the speed and accuracy of response to a 999 call. Emerging tools and technology have huge potential to change ways of working for Emergency Operations Centres (EOCs) to achieve faster and more effective triage of patients.

Approach

TN supported five ambulance service Trusts to collaboratively scope opportunities to better utilise technology and AI, and chart a path forward in the sector:

  1. Co-developing AI use cases: Created wireframe tools to test with staff and identify benefits and risks for implementation
  2. Developing funding cases: Engaged with technology suppliers to develop clear roadmaps for implementation, including timelines, costs, and projected benefits
  3. Established a Community of Practice: Brought together EOC teams to create a platform for sharing best practice and lessons learned
  4. Engagement: Mapped current ways of working across Trusts through site visits and observations to shed light on shared challenges and areas of opportunity
